FIRST

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded by inventor Dean Kamen in 1989.  FIRST has a vision of creating a culture where students of all ages and backgrounds have the opportunity to be inspired by innovation, science, and technology.  FIRST uses robotics as the draw to inspire children of all ages to engage in hands on learning experiences.  There are currently four FIRST programs

Jr. FIRST LEGO League (JR. FLL)

Jr. FLL is the FIRST program for children ages 6-9.  Jr. FLL teams explore real world scientific concepts through a new science/technology related theme each year.  Through creative expression, team work, and innovation, Jr. FLL teams create models that demonstrate their learning of basic robotics skills and understanding of information related to the theme.  For more information visit Jr. FLL’s website.

FIRST LEGO League (FLL)

Youth ages 9 to 14 can participate in FIRST LEGO League. FLL provides hands on learning opportunities in robotics, science, technology, and innovation. Teams compete in a different theme area each year.  In addition to robotics, teams come up with their own innovative solution to a real world problem related to the theme. Visit the FLL website to learn more.

FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC)

FTC is for students 7-12th grade.  Teams compete in alliances against other teams using a robot they have designed, built, and programmed. Students work with coaches and mentors.  Team members get to apply math and engineering skills while problem solving and working together as a team.  You can find more information on the FTC website.

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC)

FRC is the varsity “Sport for the Mind” as coined by FIRST. Students in grades 9-12 work with volunteer coaches and mentors from the professional community. In an intense engineering, robotics experience, teams build 120 lb. robots from scratch in about six weeks.  Teams brand, market, and fund raise for their team.  In a robotics sporting event, teams use their robots to form alliances to compete against other alliances on a large playing field.  To learn more about FRC, visit the website.
